Virrey created this video artwork series whilst locking herself in a room for 30 days alone as she believes private moments are the best way to create universal messages. ‘A Room of One's Own’ consists of multiple screens having one screen per emotion/theme/human experience. It collectively tells us a story of what the artist felt and often thought about during isolation.
The artwork explores the intimate relationship between the room inhabitant’s inner self, alter egos, and multiple identities. Achieved by constantly redesigning the room to showcase the true vulnerability, cloning the inhabitant, and having multiple screens being looped. The duration of the video signifies how long Virrey felt that emotion or thought about a certain topic during her stay in the room
The title of the video art series is named after a feminist book (1929) by Virginia Woolf that explores the theme of liberation, independence, self-expression, and creative freedom being celebrated privately in a room. This video artwork reveals the artist’s personal beliefs about life, consumerism, intimacy, culture, and mortality. The black cords being shown are a metaphorical representation of ‘multiple Isabelles’ connected to form one ‘true identity'. Thus, it can be argued that this video artwork is an extension of Virrey’s mind.
